What an Ultrasound Checks
Gestational age
The number of weeks along you are shapes every decision you might face. For anyone considering abortion, this is especially relevant. The abortion pill is FDA-approved only through 10 weeks of pregnancy, and an ultrasound is the only way to confirm gestational age accurately.
It also helps estimate your due date and plan prenatal care if you are continuing the pregnancy.
Location of the pregnancy
In some cases, a fertilized egg implants in a fallopian tube rather than the uterus. This is an ectopic pregnancy, and it requires medical attention right away. Because symptoms are not always present, an ultrasound is the only reliable way to confirm the pregnancy is where it should be.
Left undetected, an ectopic pregnancy can become a serious medical emergency.
Viability
Miscarriage occurs in as many as 26% of known pregnancies, often with no clear warning signs. An ultrasound can detect whether the pregnancy is progressing, and if it is not, you will need to know so that appropriate follow-up care can happen as soon as possible.
